Health centre.
It all started here! The health centre is the first project carried out by our non-profit organisation, in 2009.
Before that, there was nothing more than a mud hut with a palm-leaf roof on this site. In 2008, construction of a new medical centre began: a 120 m² building made of concrete and cement blocks, officially inaugurated in the summer of 2009.
The centre has eight beds and also includes the head nurse’s office, a treatment room, and a small pharmacy.
The centre was initially managed privately by its founder, but it soon became clear that his motivations were more economic than medical. The medical management was therefore handed over to the ‘health zone’, which now oversees the healthcare services, while the non-profit organisation takes care of the infrastructure of the centre.
Subsequently, the centre was equipped with solar panels and a lighting system.
Next to the health centre, there is also a building for accommodating the relatives accompanying patients, as well as a maternity building with a delivery room, an observation room with six beds, and an office for the nurse on duty.
The centre has been operating continuously since 2009. Around twenty people are received and treated there every day, and on average six of the eight beds are occupied by patients who require treatment on site.
Today, the maternity unit needs to be rebuilt: this is our next major project.
